About

Born in Ryde, Isle of Wight, to Italian-Scottish parents, Anthony Minghella studied drama at the University of Hull, where he later lectured. He gained recognition in theatre with his play Made in Bangkok (1986), then in film with Truly, Madly, Deeply (1990), which won a BAFTA. His international fame came with The English Patient (1996), which won nine Oscars, including Best Director. He went on to direct The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) and Cold Mountain (2003). He also produced Oscar-nominated films and directed the opera Madama Butterfly. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2001.
