About

Anna Politkovskaya, born in New York to Soviet-Ukrainian diplomat parents, studied journalism at Moscow State University. She worked for Izvestia before joining Novaya Gazeta in 1999, where she became a special correspondent. She made over 50 trips to Chechnya, documenting human rights abuses during the Second Chechen War. She was detained and threatened in 2001, negotiated during the Moscow theater hostage crisis in 2002, and was poisoned in 2004. Her assassination in 2006 drew international condemnation.
