About

Andrzej Żuławski was a Polish film director and writer born in Lwów (now Lviv, Ukraine) and died in Warsaw. After studying philosophy at the Sorbonne and cinema at IDHEC, he began as an assistant to Andrzej Wajda. His first feature, The Third Part of the Night (1971), draws on his father's wartime experiences. His next film, The Devil (1972), was banned by communist authorities for sixteen years. He is best known for Possession (1981), which earned Isabelle Adjani the Best Actress award at Cannes. His work, marked by an expressionist and intense style, also includes On the Silver Globe (1988), made under difficult conditions. His final film, Cosmos (2015), won the Best Direction award at Locarno.
