Andrzej Sapkowski, born June 21, 1948, in Łódź, is a Polish fantasy writer. Trained as an economist, he worked in international trade before becoming a full-time writer in 1994. He debuted in 1986 with the short story 'The Witcher,' which won third prize in Fantastyka magazine's contest. The story's popularity led to the Witcher Saga, featuring monster hunter Geralt of Rivia. He is also the author of the Hussite Trilogy, a historical fantasy set during the 15th-century Hussite Wars. A five-time winner of the Janusz A. Zajdel Award, he received the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2016. His books, translated into some thirty languages, have inspired video games and a television series.
