About

André Maurois, born Émile Salomon Wilhelm Herzog, was a French writer born in Elbeuf in 1885. After serving as an interpreter with the British army during World War I, he achieved success with his first novel, Les Silences du colonel Bramble (1918). He is best known for his literary biographies, including Ariel ou la Vie de Shelley (1923) and À la Recherche de Marcel Proust (1949). His novel Climats (1928) is widely regarded as his fictional masterpiece. Elected to the Académie française in 1938, he also wrote major historical works. He died in 1967 in Neuilly-sur-Seine.
