About

Born Gerhart Hirsch in Vienna, André Gorz fled Austria after the Nazi annexation and studied in Switzerland. Settling in Paris in 1949, he became a journalist under the pseudonym Michel Bosquet and co-founded Le Nouvel Observateur. Close to Sartre, he published major essays on political ecology, the critique of work, and economics. His work, marked by ecology and the critique of capitalism, influenced the European left. He died in 2007 with his wife Dorine.
