About

André Cayatte, born on February 3, 1909 in Carcassonne and died on February 6, 1989 in Paris, was a French film director. Trained as a lawyer, he turned to journalism, novel writing, and cinema. He began as a screenwriter in 1938 and directed his first film in 1942. He is known for his socially engaged courtroom dramas, such as Justice est faite (1950) and Nous sommes tous des assassins (1952), which condemned the death penalty. His film Le Passage du Rhin (1960) won a second Golden Lion at Venice. In the 1970s, he achieved great success with Mourir d'aimer (1971). Criticized by the New Wave for his thesis films, his work was later reassessed. He directed about thirty feature films and worked for television in the 1980s.
