About
Alexander Alekhine, born in Moscow in 1892, was a Russian chess player who became a French citizen. He became one of the first official grandmasters in 1914 and won the Soviet Russian championship in 1920. After leaving the USSR in 1921, he settled in France. In 1927, he defeated José Raúl Capablanca to become the fourth World Chess Champion, a title he held until his death, with a break between 1935 and 1937. Known for his attacking style, he authored annotated game collections and held blindfold chess records. He died in Portugal in 1946.
