About

Alessandro Manzoni (1785-1873) was an Italian Romantic writer, a major figure in Italian literature. Born in Milan, he was the grandson of Cesare Beccaria. After religious studies, he stayed in Paris where he frequented intellectual circles. His conversion to Catholicism in 1810 deeply influenced his work. He authored the historical tragedies 'Il Conte di Carmagnola' and 'Adelchi', the ode 'Il Cinque Maggio', and the 'Inni Sacri'. His masterpiece, the historical novel 'I Promessi Sposi' (The Betrothed), published in 1827 and revised in 1840-1842, is considered a cornerstone of modern Italian. Appointed senator of the Kingdom of Italy in 1860, he died in Milan in 1873, honored with a state funeral.
