About

Jacques Victor Albert de Broglie, 4th Duke of Broglie, was born in Paris in 1821. Son of Duke Victor de Broglie and grandson of Madame de Staël, he pursued a career in politics and letters. Elected to the Académie française in 1862, he became deputy for Eure in 1871 and then ambassador to London. He served as President of the Council twice under the Third Republic, in 1873-1874 and 1877. An Orleanist monarchist, he withdrew from political life after his electoral defeat in 1885. Author of a major historical work, L'Église et l'Empire romain au IVe siècle, he contributed to the Revue des Deux Mondes and chaired the board of Saint-Gobain. He died in Paris in 1901.
