Alan Alda, born Alphonso D'Abruzzo in the Bronx, is an American actor, director, and writer. He is best known for his role as Captain Hawkeye Pierce in the TV series M*A*S*H (1972-1983), for which he also wrote and directed episodes. He has won six Emmy Awards, including one in each of the categories acting, writing, and directing, as well as six Golden Globes. In film, he was nominated for an Oscar for The Aviator (2004) and appeared in movies such as Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) and Marriage Story (2019). A science enthusiast, he hosted Scientific American Frontiers and founded the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University. He is also a bestselling memoirist.
