About
Alain Robbe-Grillet, born August 18, 1922 in Brest and died February 18, 2008 in Caen, was a French writer and filmmaker. Trained as a statistician and agronomist, he turned to literature around age thirty. As the leading theoretician of the nouveau roman, he rejected plot, character psychology, and linear narrative in favor of objective description and recurring imagery. His essay collection Pour un nouveau roman (1963) articulated the movement's principles. He is also known for his screenplay for the film Last Year at Marienbad (1961) and for his own directorial works. Elected to the Académie française in 2004, he was never formally received.
