About

Adrian Frutiger (1928-2015) was a Swiss typeface designer and a major figure in 20th-century typography. After an apprenticeship as a typesetter and studies in Zurich, he moved to Paris in 1952, where he became artistic director at the Deberny & Peignot foundry. He designed iconic typefaces such as Univers (1957), the first sans-serif family systematically coordinated, and Frutiger (1976), created for the signage of Charles de Gaulle Airport. His OCR-B (1968) became an international standard for optical character recognition. He also created over 40 typefaces, including Avenir and Méridien, and taught in Paris. Recipient of the Gutenberg Prize in 1986, he left a lasting mark on graphic design and visual communication.
