About

Adolphe Thiers (1797-1877) was a major figure in French political life. A journalist and historian, he co-founded the opposition newspaper Le National and played a key role in the July Revolution of 1830. Under the July Monarchy, he served as minister and Prime Minister several times. His monumental historical works, Histoire de la Révolution française and Histoire du Consulat et de l'Empire, were widely successful. After the fall of the Second Empire, he became head of the executive power in 1871, negotiated peace with Germany, suppressed the Paris Commune, and became the first president of the Third Republic. He facilitated the early payment of the war indemnity, leading to the departure of German troops in 1873.
